SAFESPORT
Safeguarding Children's Health and Wellbeing with Gradual participation-in-Sport Strategies
The SAFESPORT project is designed to transform sports education by promoting safe participation and inclusive access for all children. The project addresses the risks associated with early sports specialization, including increased injury rates and psychological stress, by introducing structured and gradual participation strategies. At the core of the project lies the Genius-Safe-Motor-Program (GSMP), a multidisciplinary training model that draws inspiration from principles of judo fall-control, respect, critical thinking, and dedication. These elements are integrated into an innovative educational framework that promotes physical development while protecting children’s health and wellbeing.
To achieve its goals, the project will develop a comprehensive manual that presents unified guidelines for safe sports participation. These guidelines will be disseminated through an international workshop aimed at training sport professionals who will then organize a series of national and international events in Slovenia, Greece, and Croatia. These events will provide practical tools and methods to sports teachers, coaches, and educators, enabling them to implement the GSMP methodology in their respective communities. Special emphasis will be placed on the inclusion of children with disabilities and children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring equal opportunities for participation.
The expected impact of SAFESPORT includes increased participation in sports, reduced injury rates, improved mental health, and strengthened capacity within sport organizations. By raising awareness of the negative consequences of early sports specialization, the project empowers professionals and stakeholders to adopt safer and more diverse athletic development pathways. Ultimately, SAFESPORT contributes to European policy objectives in sport and public health, promoting safer, healthier, and more inclusive communities across Europe.
